This is a very primitive Zuni fox carved from pipestone and having gorgeous inlay work for eyes. This fox is unique and wonderful, with a gorgeous turquoise arrowhead on his back as an offering. Bears are wonderful gifts for doctors, nurses and those in the military.
The fox represents protection and the ability to blend in, or become camouflaged with ones surroundings. He is quick and observant. He approaches life with amusement and cleverness and can make himself invisible when threatened. He is also loyal to loved ones and full of passion.

This fox is extremely old and primitive, it does not have a signature as there used to only be a dozen or so Zuni carvers, over the last 80 years carvers became more prolific and had to begin signing their pieces. I have many reference books and this bear looks most like the style of the incredible Natachu family, specifically Pansy Natachu. Pansy is a part of the larger Halate famil, Leonard Halate being the patriarch of the family. Leonard started the broken pebbly like heartline inlays and both Pansy Natachu and Travis Snyder who are his descendants carve in a similar way. This could be one of the three Halate carvers.
Fetishes represent unique and very personal gifts, they are wonderful for the holidays, as congratulations for life changing events and more.
American Indians have used fetishes throughout history. Fetishes are believed to hold magical powers and protect the owner or craftsmen from problems of mind or body. Some believe that their powers can even protect against problems of the universe. It is also believed that the care a fetish receives is directly related to the protection it will provide. Indians believe that fetishes must be properly cared for. They are given offerings of cornmeal and kept in special turquoise covered fetish pots or pouches. Often fetishes are adorned with turquoise, arrowheads and feathers. These are offerings to the fetish for gifts received or anticipated.
