Native American Zuni Ram Fetish Fertility Totem Wilford Cachini Fishrock & Turquoise

Sorry, this item has sold.

This is a stunning beautifully smooth and lustrous ram totem that is made of a unique fishrock with turquoise inlay for his eyes. This magical little totem has the most wonderful feel in the hand and his wonderfully carved horns draw your eye. This ram is carved deeply and beautifully. Ram totems are wonderful gifts for those trying to start a family, or for someone who has recently had a death in the family as a symbol of rebirth and the circle of life as well as to any farmers with herds of animals!

Ram is a totem that the Zuni made exclusively for the Navajo people. Zuni were traditionally farmers while the Navajo had large herds of sheep and horses. Navajo would trade the Zuni for fertility fetishes to increase their herds.

This is carved by Wilford Cachini from the Zuni nation. The Zuni village where Wilford works is known as a "village of artists". After spending a few days there, and seeing the results of their labors, we fully understand why. That they are able to produce art in such fine detail continues to make us wonder how they are able to do so without using microscopes.

Fetishes represent unique and very personal gifts, they are wonderful for the holidays, as congratulations for life changing events and more.

American Indians have used fetishes throughout history. Fetishes are believed to hold magical powers and protect the owner or craftsmen from problems of mind or body. Some believe that their powers can even protect against problems of the universe. It is also believed that the care a fetish receives is directly related to the protection it will provide. Indians believe that fetishes must be properly cared for. They are given offerings of cornmeal and kept in special turquoise covered fetish pots or pouches. Often fetishes are adorned with turquoise, arrowheads and feathers. These are offerings to the fetish for gifts received or anticipated.
